When I started doing BJJ we would practice by trying to submit each other. Even as a beginner I found myself able to defend against submissions, but as soon as I tried to submit my partner out I would end up putting myself in a position to get caught. Being offensive makes you incredibly vulnerable if you don't know what you're trying to accomplish. You will move awkwardly, leave limbs wide open, and probably be off balanced.
If you don't know what you're doing it's safer to just defend and try to stand up than to try and go offensive on the ground.
