I generally don't expect a horror to have great attention paid to set design, lighting, and character development, but del Toro certainly had each in mind. Also curious whether any of our members have seen either Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) or the cinematic adaptation of Bradbury's The Illustrated Man (1969)?

Both appear to be right up my alley.
