I find myself actually digging Bring Me the Horizon's early work. They have a sense of melody that so many of their derivative, knockoff peers had no concept of, and trashy deathcore can still be fun in small doses.

Pretty much. I accept that groups like Integrity and Ringworm are perhaps too hardcore for a metal battle, and wouldn't be remembered if not for their association with the metalcore genre -- though bands like Unbroken, Snapcase, and Poison the Well still hold up to the best of pure hardcore -- so Ringworm can be dropped, but I still think metalcore is a genre with too much quality to disrespect it by making it a joke, or at least I respect it enough that I'm not willing to give the good bands the shaft. Maybe a five band battle for
melodic metalcore at the end, but I won't give it the name "metalcore".
