It's not nostalgia. Slayer just were running on fumes at that point. They were just good fumes. They combined the best parts of South of Heaven and Reign in Blood to create a better version of the former and a less good version of the latter. And honestly I'd probably listen to South of Heaven first, just because it's more of a unique listening experience as a whole.
