Welcome back to Occult Hawk, who I haven't seen since his excellent review of Strictly Personal.
None the less, I'm convinced that Genesis is not a good place for the hypothetical person in the OP to start. It seems such an arbitrary choice in terms of style and chronology. Why start with a rock subgenre from the seventies?

If you're going for rock, Status Quo or Buddy Holly would provide a better example of its power, though personally, I would sooner go back furthur and begin the story at the beginning, in a culture far far away.. Alternatively, try something in the style of Carl Orff, who explored simple music of near-universal appeal:
