Watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time last night. Why exactly is it so highly rated? There were definitely some good scenes: the part where the one girl enters the house and stumbles upon the bone altar was legitimately unsettling, the scene after that where she is hung up on a meat hook and watches her boyfriend get dismembered was sweet, and the dinner scene was pretty original.

But in a lot of ways it was simply a mildly entertaining exploitation flick. At no point was I ever scared (but I don't really get scared by movies, so horror films generally have to have other things going for them, and this movie did not), the only memorable protagonist was the crippled brother, the villains were too cartoonish to take seriously, the atmosphere was severely lacking, and the dinner scene, while entertaining, had so many ludicrous cuts (as in editing cuts) and over-the-top screaming from the main character that it went from genuinely creepy to just plain goofy in a very short span of time.

I'd honestly take the remake over the original. It might not be brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but the opening scene with the crime scene footage was phenomenal, the kills were more exploitatively delicious, and... that guy from Full Metal Jacket's character was amazing.
