I always thought of House of 1000 Corpses as a very dark comedy horror that only truly fucked up people would find funny, which is why I love it. Whereas The Devil's Rejects has a lot of dramatic elements, and if you take out the rape scenes it might (emphasis on might) have actually been well received by more critics.
EDIT - The remakes did feature the highlight of Rob Zombie's film career though.
