Yeah, the whole idea of punk seems to be against what punk became. As far as I'm concerned, and as much as I like plenty of punk bands, post-punk is what punk really became. Becoming something truly different and not falling into the traps of preconceived notions of what a band should sound like are what post-punk was all about and what punk was NOT about after the first wave or two.

All punk post 70's was more punk in every way. Hardcore, post-hardcore, skate punk, whatever. The key to punk is to not take yourself too seriously and have fun producing music. Bands like Ramones and Sex Pistols just didn't think outside of the Maximum Rock n Roll mindset. It's self parody is what it is.
Granted, Clash and Buzzcocks are great.
