I still don't see a huge connection. By those standards, most dirty, distorted punk is grunge too. I just think that outside of groups like Tad and Green River, grunge really had time to form into a real sound. I get that all the bands are sorta likeminded, and there was definitely a character to the Seattle scene, but I just don't see a definitive sound for the genre. If distortion and angst are it's main characteristics, a lot of other rock grouos can be considered grunge.
