Parliament's Chocolate City and The Clones Of Dr Funkenstein are good albums to start with P-Funk. I find these two records more easy to get into than the Funkadelic ones.

As Frownland suggested Hell by James Brown already, I will add his The Payback LP but most of his discography is recommended.

Then try some Ohio Players and early Kool & The Gang.
