Besides, Priest formed in '71. Two years before Sabbath Bloody Sabbath came out. Granted the first album wasn't published till '74, but they were playing all over England before then. I don't know for sure, but unless it was straight covers, they gave birth to heavy metal.
Sabbath was a huge influence on the style. But musically they were very borderline. Later albums could be considered metal, however, when it mattered they were not.
