John Chowning developed FM synthesis while working for Stanford University. So this recording (he only made a few) is him using FM synthesis, years before FM became ubiquitous with the Yamaha DX7. FM might seem like a thing of the past, but it's still used today. Skrillex uses Native Instruments FM8, a soft ware version, to achieve his atomic bass wobbles.
