His self-titled album is generally considered his best studio album. The album before that,
Our Mother the Mountain isn't QUITE as good, but it's the true beginning of his legend.
Delta Momma Blues and
High, Low, and In Between are a bit different, adding blues and gospel to his sound, respectively, and are just as good. His live album
Live at the Old Quarter is regarded as the definitive Townes experience though. But just start with
Townes Van Zandt. You simply can't go wrong with it. I don't even much like folk, but even I find Townes to be crack.
