EDIT: There's no plain "avant-garde" on RYM. There's avant-garde jazz, avant-garde metal, avant prog and avant-folk. Might be a couple others, but I can't find plain avant-garde.

" Avant-garde" music is a historical term, and more real than "Freak Folk" which is most likely made-up by some amateur hipster music critic, and then applied to bands like Comus, Vashti Bunyan and Exuma retroactively.
