Just were not many earlier, of course there was Grace Slick and Janis Joplin,
and lets not forget Michelle and Cass with The Mamas and the Papas.
of course there were all the "girl groups"of the 50s and 60s even if they were strictly vocals and not rock bands in the true sense. Some fun music though,like the Shangri-las , Marvelettes, etc and of course the Motown soul sound of such as the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas.
