I love Kubrick but that movie is not very good. I mean, there's some amazing technical achievements, but the story doesn't make much sense when separated from the book. It
should make sense on its own, otherwise, how can you call it a good movie? Basically, everything from when the crazy light show starts is empty symbolism which can mean whatever you want it to mean. Every analysis I've read indicates as much. If symbolism means whatever you, yourself bring to the table, then it doesn't mean anything. The movie is hollow in my totally-not-unpopular opinion.
Don't talk about the book. The movie either stands on its own, or it falls.
EDIT: I liked the second movie quite a bit though and I'm a fan of Kubrick, so don't call me a philistine
