Then you don't understand what you're hearing very well if that sounds metronomic or as if he's "keeping the beat steady on a single drum" minus the occasional fill.

We could go bar by bar, but for example, for the first couple bars, he's melodically playing the riff in unison. Then he comes in with the groove on the floor toms and low toms as a bass(guitar)-like counterpoint to the riff, then at :45 he does a combination of that and playing both in unison with the riff and playing busier counterpoint to the riff, melodically, across his toms. And so on.
