I don't know much about music theory and such, but I've always had a keen ear for rhythm. I'd say Ulrich has a very sort of loose and natural feel. He really grooves along with the music and it sounds lively. His deficits are definetely in other areas. For boring, lifeless metronome drums, listen to something like Periphery or that kind of heavily quantized modern prog/metal/djent garbage.
Now, his boring use of cymbals might be more of a convincing gripe to have with the man. And the stupid face he makes when he plays.
