My opinion is that you should, at this time, do alternate-picking excercises. Because, unless you have a teacher, in which case you should do what he/she says, chances are you're only doing downstrokes. This means, that when you pick, you should alternate between picking down, pushing the pick to the floor, and then going up, pulling the pick torwards your body. Then when that's comfortable to do, try alternating between strings, then speeding up. After that's down, try to work on your left hand dexterity. So, you should try picking in the following combination on the high E string (Thinnest), B, G, all the way down to the low E string (Thickest).

1-2-3-4-3-2-1

Then, try it with this.

1-4-2-3

Remember to alternate pick all of this. Trust me, I know it's boring, but you'll get much better, much faster.
