Honestly the portrayal of homosexuality in pop music entirely depends on gender; with male vocalists it's meant to be more of an undertone rather than a focus (with the exception of electro-pop and shock pop artists like Jeffree Star, BOTDF, and such who base their image and sound around their sexuality / sexual exploits).
While with females, they can get away with just about anything involving homosexuality simply because female on female relations are more marketable than male on male relations. Songs with female on female are far more common, and even ones that are blatantly contrived can become popular - Example:
