That's mostly what bigger name lo-fi artists do. Steve Albini's a great producer in his own right and it shows.
And then stuff like Archers of Loaf and Pavement is super well produced but it still has that raw sound to it. While, on another side of the spectrum, Bad Brains S/T might be the worst produced album I've ever heard, yet I love the **** out of the production anyways.
