OfficeMax/Depot Accused of Running a Real-World Tech Support Scam
I remember when this "service" was launched at OfficeMax/Depot back when I worked there. Their free PC Checkup software begins its test by asking if the customer experiences any pop-ups, slow performance, etc. If they answer "yes" then it runs a fake scan and falsely reports malware detection, after which the corporation offers to charge for repairs.
They also run a racket where their sales staff ask a series of "qualifying" questions to potential PC purchasers. If the customer doesn't agree to buy 1) a desktop 2) a monitor 3) Microsoft Office 4) Norton Antivirus 5) a PC "protection" insurance plan 6) and an accessory, employees are encouraged to "check in the back" and return to tell the customer that they've none of the machines in stock.
F*cking deplorable.
