Strange Detachment
They came to see the sights
Far from the bright city lights
They laughed took pictures at the gates
He sat in the darkness and waited
Sitting in the arrow watching the crowd
Turning to people and thinking out loud
One o’ clock he rose with a smile
Fiery shots rang out from his rifle
He watched as they all fell down without a fight
Smoke drifting above his rifle sight
He left the restaurant with three notches on his belt
No one could understand the pleasure he felt
A husband and a wife went down in the fire
He didn’t blink and he didn’t tire
Walking through the ruins he makes to leave
Sweat on his face and blood on his sleave
He made for a car and fled the scene
His tally had now reached sixteen
Passing a mother and a child
He shot them both and left
Their bodies in the wild
The cops surrounded the house
Trying to be as quiet as a mouse
But he saw them and made the call
Give into his demands or the hostages would fall
But early next morning a fire was started
He ran out flaming and the air was parted
The cops grabbed him and pushed him to the ground
He just smiled and didn’t make a sound
They took the killer in alive
His total had reached thirty-five
For years to come they would talk about his spree
Children hide under their beds
They cry to their parents when they hear his name
He hurt us so bad but he’ll never be free
