The overall issue isn't Michael Brown himself. He became a symbol (not the most sympathetic symbol) for the fact that in today's America, blacks are being shot and killed by cops at an alarming rate. "Stupid"/"non-compliant"/"unfortunate"/"mistaken" is far more likely to be fatal to black men than it is to be for white men.

Somehow Brown became the symbol for this problem.
