If you're gonna include anime then you need to check out Osamu Tezuka, as he basically invented anime in the 50s. I'm pretty ignorant on him tbh, but he's required viewing if you're going that far back. From what I understand he had a pretty varied career, doing kids shows, all the way up to adult stuff that pushed boundaries that would probably be controversial and mature even today.
