Did you revert your system updates to isolate what might be causing the problem? I've had issues in the past with driver/system updates creating unintentional problems and the only fix was to wait for a second patch.

I'm gonna repost this to a tech forum I use and see if I can find something more conclusive because I really don't know much about Ubuntu and I feel stupid asking you such a dumb question.
