I'd heard generic radio country from the 90s/00s before I heard Townes, but "Our Mother the Mountain" was the first time I ever heard any country that made me realize that I might actually like the genre. It took a good long time before I really got into country, but when a buddy of mine posted that song in a forum I listened to it on repeat and was totally sprung. I've tried finding other country artists who can evoke that kind of otherworldly gothic creepiness, but am still waiting. "Our Mother the Mountain" is still one of the best songs I've ever heard. If there's a better country artist than Townes then I haven't heard them.
