Bootsy Collins - Tha Funk Capitol of the World
A varied, if occasionally pedestrian, exploration into the funk sphere. Variety is its strongest point, and when George Duke shows up on 'The Jazz Greats (A Tribute to Jazz)' I found myself smiling a bit. And pairing that horn section with Samuel L. Jackson on 'After These Messages' certainly does indicate there's genius lurking here and there throughout. The problem is I wanted more Earth, Wind & Fire and Slave and less pointless cameos and spoken word. I mean, we all know Bootsy can really rip (see his 1992 outing with Praxis or anything he did in the early 80's). Just wish we could have heard more of that here in "tha" Funk Capitol.
7 out of 10.
