I wanted to update my list again. I know Trollheart doesn't want this thread used for this purpose, but whatever.

1. Dopesmoker [2012 reissue] by Sleep—Atmospheric stoner/doom. One of the most atmospheric albums I've heard. Sounds like the soundtrack for some kind of fantastic journey. The vocals can get a bit grating towards the end, but the riffs and solos are amazing.
2. Darkness Descends by Dark Angel—High-speed thrash metal. Listening to this album is like being run over by a train. Don Doty sounds maniacal, and Gene Hoglan is amazing throughout. A lot of people like to say this is a generic high-speed thrash album, but ask 7 different people to name their favorite song from this album and you'll get at least 6 of the 7 tracks.
3. Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel—The greatest death metal album. The most satanic album I know of. The true genius of this album is combining dissonant parts together. The riffs alternate between being strangely hypnotizing, to thumping, wild, bastardized melodies. Blazing fast minor key melodies, wild solos, and blast beats sometimes appear, just to add to the carnage. All of these things are combined or interchanged with shocking fluidity. Everything doesn't make sense, but everything sounds organic. Music for a slow descent into hell turns into music for occult rituals turns into music for a ferocious monster galloping, chasing you across the countryside.
4. Dopethrone by Electric Wizard—A doom metal revolution that touches on stoner, trad. doom, sludge, funeral doom, psychedelic rock, and drone metal styles. It steamrolls a path in the opposite direction from the doom metal bands of the 80s and 90s.
5. Deception Ignored by Deathrow—Progressive/technical thrash metal. The super chromatic riffs this album uses make the world appear inside-out and upside-down, basically Gorgut's Obscura in thrash metal form.
6. Victims of Deception by Heathen—A Master of Puppets/...And Justice for All clone, but better. A melodic, catchy, and very rhythmically heavy thrash album.
7. Variations On A Theme by OM—Meditative stoner metal that is riffs, vocals, and drums for the entire album. Chris Haikus is one of my favorite drummers. Another perfect album.
8. Slaughter In the Vatican by Exhorder—Brutal thrash metal that does everything right.
9. Master of Puppets by Metallica—This thing is a monster. It has a thick, overbearing atmosphere constantly. It also has a crushing sound to it, and even on the lighter tracks the music is pummeling. An album that can do no wrong, but there are some pretty clear highlights on the album.
10. Individual Thought Patterns by Death—Raw technical death metal. More raw, more frantic, and more melodic than Human.
