I think it would have been better had he said, with mock surprise, "Me? You want me, the infamous baby-eater of San Marcos, to hold your baby? Well, if you think I should..." Exit baby-holder with horrified expression, problem solved.

Seriously, I'm with Chio: why would you want someone to hold your baby? Surely he/she is, at that time, your most precious possession and you would be damned if you'd let someone you didn't know hold them? Would be akin to saying "Hey, stranger! Want to drive my brand new Ferrari?" No?
