Well it should have been an R&B/Hip-Hop album next, but it ain't available so we're back in country, er, country, though this has a large slab of rock added. Kicks off nicely, powerful as opposed to Barry Zito's thoughtful acoustic musings, and a sense of even hard rock about this with rising guitar solos and punching drums. I guess it would have been a great title for a Christian Rock album, but luckily that's not what we're in for. There are sixteen tracks here, so hopefully it'll continue in the vein in which it's begun. Hmm. “The Weekend” veers a little too close to pop territory, but I'm sure it's only temporary. You know, it's odd, but when they say less is more, well I enjoyed Zito's six songs more than I have six on this album so far. It's kind of not quite boring me but not raising any passion or interest, yet anyway. You know, I could be bailing here. I'm just not feeling it on this one. Give it a few more tracks, see how it goes.
Okay, “It's About to Get Dirty” amped things up a little, good song. It's not that this is a terrible or even bad album, I just don't hear too much to induce me to go the rest of the way (we're at track seven now). It's kind of like there's too much pop, a little country and a little rock, which is quite confusing, especially with the title of the album and the expectation of a real badass Steve Earle type country/rock album. It is, in a word, a little, well, weak. Okay, next one isn't bad. Might make it through. This is not what I had expected though. OK I won't be bailing, not now, but I'm still kind of waiting for this to end. Sigh. Jesus! RYM categorises this as .... Bro-Country! God help me!
Edit: Okay, as usual I posted before the end of the album, and it's kicked up pretty well for the last few tracks. Still, it's too long to wait. I could have bailed, and nearly did. Not good enough, Brantley my bro. Not even.
