a little different in general, a lot different for Flannagan. i think what has impressed me so far with his work is that he takes a relatively traditional style horror and adds a lot of depth to his characters and puts an emphasis on the atmosphere. in saying that, they’re rather surface level films that you can properly digest with your first viewing.

this one isn’t the most complex or artistic film ever, don’t get me wrong, but there are a few moments where he definitely branches out and looks to move into new territory that i haven’t previously seen him explore. this is why i think a 2nd viewing is required for first half of the movie, i feel like maybe it will grow on me. i won’t get into the stuff i don’t like until others have seen it as well.

there’s also a scene with such effective use of gore that i actually had to look away and close my eyes. i can’t think of another time that’s happened to me.
