So, at school, the ammonia refrigeration teacher was gone for the day. Not a big deal, we don't even have an ammonia class today. However, when I get to industrial wiring methods (a class usually taught by the refigeration teacher, who today was going to be taught by the fluid power and mechanics teacher) which is in the same building as our ammonia classes as well as the same building as our own small ammonia refrigeration system, the fluid power and mechanics teacher told me and another student that he could smell a leak, but he knows nothing about ammonia so he didn't know how to pinpoint it.

So we, students with little practical experience, grab some leak detectors and find the leak. Here's the thing though, we tracked it down to what seemed to be the one valve on the system that had no shutoffs, which means we couldn't isolate it. Not only that, the system wasn't and was not ready to run live, meaning even if we could isolate, we had no way of pumping it out.

We spent hours trying to fix it, until we eventually conceded that two students and a teacher for a different subject didn't have enough knowledge to fix it given the whole no shutoffs and no way to pump out scenario. We had to call in a technician from Tyson (which is right next to our school) to come and fix it.

We learned a lot from it though.
