Off the top of my head, I'd go for Suzy Quatro for being such a pioneer and for cranking out some good rocking pop, then the outstanding Patti Smith, for taking chics-with-attitude to a whole new level.
Honourable mention to Susan Tedeschi: if she's good enough for Butch Trucks, she's good enough for this thread:-
Edit: Thinking about it, I generally prefer female musicians when they do softer material, with a bit of those nuanced feminine vocals. Not so many ladies can convincingly do the essentially aggressive sound of rock imo. Does that mean I should go to gender-equality counseling?
