We had a cat that stuck around our house for a solid two weeks and we did the same thing (food, water, shelter). We even named the darn thing. We called it Tony Danza. He got so comfortable with us that he would let us pet him and he'd even sit in our laps while we hung out on the front porch.
I finally convinced my girlfriend that he had to be someone else's cat, and that she should post his picture to the local missing pet facebook page. We were laying in bed that night and received a phone call from the cat's owner. Apparently this little stinker had been missing for almost a month, and his owner was our neighbor three doors down the street. Also, the cat was actually a pet rescue from hurricane Harvey, so this little dingleberry has had a hell of a life so far. The owner came and picked him up that night. We just recently moved into our place so that was the first neighbor we actually met. Now we're a part of the neighborhood watch group on facebook, which is surprisingly really nice. Lots of informative shiit on that page haha.
