^ Yes, I saw a clip of theirs on Youtube and, not expecting very much, was surprised at how good they were. I was lucky enough to see Beefheart twice; first time brilliant, second time patchy if truth be told.

That's easy to date because I was actually at one of the recording locations for Soft Machine Six (
https://www.allmusic.com/album/six-mw0000180049 ), so that makes it Oct or Nov 1972.
I know the name comes, like Steely Dan, from William Burroughs, so I can make a reluctant guess I suppose!
