I also remember reading something about the kid being "good at history and explaining how the jews were partially to blame", so she could have just fallen into the trap of teenage gullibility or whatever you want to call it. When someone you trust introduces you to new ideas you're naive about it's pretty common to take them at their word (since modern education doesn't teach you how to think or skepticism). I thought this too. If she's in a more liberal area then it's likely that she wouldn't recognize those talking points and might just interpret it as him being intelligent. This one is much more difficult to determine than rebellion so I didn't bring it up initially.
