I suppose I was thinking in very general terms about why some rock sounds kind of mediocre. In fact, rock is one of my favourite genres, with a million and one exceptions to what I was complaining about - or a million and one examples of when that 4-instrument line up is just perfect.
Yeah, I don't really know what post-punk sounds like, so I might take a look at the Minutemen that you mention. Thanks.
