I still remember his debut on the Top of the Pops t.v program. To my disappointment, not only my mum, but some of my friends were also saying,
"What does he think he looks like?" in that rising tone which indicates outrage.
In Britain, people soon realized that his music was less interesting than his appearance, and if anything, he became a bit of a laughing-stock I believe.
