I never used email til the early 2000s, but I never got any mail or sent anything, it was all for sign-ups. My main memories from my early days on the internet were on forums and chat rooms, holy ****. I remember there was this big graphics craze in the forum community - people were making some real masterful **** with Photoshop, people requesting custom avatars and signatures. Not email related, but related to what I used my email for.
