It's an unconscious habit for the most part. (When one grows up poor and then is suddenly catapulted into middle class as a kid, you tend to want to mask any accent/trait that reveals your true ragamuffin nature.) It still comes out if I'm very tired, irritated or drunk.

I'm kinda the opposite. I'm from a middle class family but have grabbed the scrub life by the balls, and while I work mainly with poor
black people, it's still encouraged me to foster that little bit of Southern accent I already had (mostly in a jokey manner) and I think I'm developing a real accent. It's off and on though.
