Sansa and JWB have both expressed a desire to come back pretty often. JWB even wanted to post a short story of his in the Horror Writing Competition last year, but couldn't.

Please don't use the Slippery Slope Logical Fallacy. It's like the defining fallacy of old dudes. "My word! If we let one of them into the country club, we'll have to let everyone in! My monocle just couldn't handle such tomfoolery!"

Consider this: during this whole convo about bringing people back, of all the people who have ever been banned in MB history, only two members were still given a fuck about by at least a few people in the community.

Yes, that is indeed what the type of ban is intended for. Kind of like how the rules of MB are intended to keep the community happy and reasonable. But we all bend the rules all the time in the circumstances when they do more needless harm to the community than good.

Hawk and Chula have both come close to perma-bans. And Batty actually went all-city. But each of them also contribute positively to the community.

It actually is possible for a ban to do more harm than good in the long run. Therefore, all bans, including ones intended by the mods to be permanent, should be scrutinized by the community. Keeping a ban active just because "It's called a permanent ban, so it should be permanent!" is silly. The name of it doesn't matter. The intent of it doesn't matter. It's the benefit of it to the community that matters, and should be discussed.

This really isn't that hard to understand. Keep calling them permanent bans, since that's what they're primarily for, and what they'll end up being 99% of the time. But if people actively miss certain members even over a year later, and those members have matured and expressed an interest in one last shot, are you really going to keep them out just because you don't want to think about whether or not a ban is actually benefiting the community?
