They're certainly not a prog band, and most progheads would sniff in disgust if you mentioned them, kind of like Supertramp. But they definitely have prog elements. After all, side three of Out of the Blue is taken up by one long four-movement suite. They interpreted Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King." They use cellos and violins. None of which means they are a prog band, but coupled with some of the lyrical material, there are definitely some prog leanings in there.

And, um, progarchives has them as "crossover prog", so I'm not sure where you're getting that from...
