I feel like classical is a genre that rewards close listening particularly much, but some of the older stuff doesn't grab me. This is a generalization, but when we move further back than the romantic era, I'm less interested in a lot of the music written there.
Like I said elsewhere, I tend to find the pieces written with a religious function to generally be more moving when it comes to pre-romantic era classical.
