The problem was that they didn't earn Batman's more extreme vigilantism. They just sort of said that he was a more extreme vigilante. Go read The Dark Knight Returns. I think people deify that book for the wrong reasons. The Batman in that story is unhinged, violent, and sadistic in a way that Batman is never characterized in continuity, and it feels reasonable when you consider how Batman might be, but it explores a world where that Batman might be. Whereas the Batman of Batman v. Superman is just a different Batman for the sake of him not being the Nolan Batman.
