Um... read Year One. It's a four issue series so it doesn't require any real commitment but it also is a very good and non-cheesy way to explore what Batman is. It's basically a far more satisfying version of Batman Begins. It's a great way to associate early Batman's obsession with fixing the Gotham that existed when his parents were killed rather than just watching him fight supervillains. And his fighting that SWAT team is one of the most satisfying things to ever happen in a Batman comic.

But if you want to read a comic like I was talking about where Batman is interpreted entirely differently where he's kind of interpreted in a way that would make sense in the real world where he's more vengeful and sadistic towards criminals then The Return of the Dark Knight is good, though... it's really weird in a political and social sense. I think a lot of the people who dick suck it, even non-comic book critics, don't really appreciate just how ****ing crazy and objectivist the writer is. But that honestly makes it even more fascinating even if it kind of takes you out of the story while you're analyzing it.
