Franklin doesn't gel at all with them and basically serves to bring the ghetto element into the story as a throwback to San Andreas.

I don't really remember any of the GTA games having stories that gelled as a whole tbh. I certainly don't remember what the hell IV was about. 5 was about Franklin getting heavier into crime, Michael getting back into crime while also being conflicted on how it affected his life, while Trevor wanted nothing more to be the crimiest. The actual story structure wasn't all that memorable, but the narratives of the characters' stories were very memorable which is far more than I can say for many GTA games.
