And Wild ARMs 3 in particular cuts out the fat. While I didn't like it that much, Blue Dragon on the 360 also had an interesting answer to that combat problem. You could extend a sort of circle around your character when running around. Any enemy groups touched by the circle would be included in the fight if you touched one of them, so you could make enemy groups bigger and more dangerous for more potential rewards.

Didn't necessarily solve the whole problem, but the idea is fantastic - if handled better at least, it could be.
