I hold both instruments in the same respect but I would recommend the Trumpet, though the trombone is essential to most bands, you can go a lot farther with the Trumpet. i am a professional trumpet player, and i do agree with him

if you are playing the trombone in a band with more than 5 or 6 members, you will ALWAYS take the back seat to the trumpets (except for solos)

it is also easier to play notes on a trumpet faster than a trombone (unless you want your arms to fall off)
the trombone is also featured in hundreds of ska songs (like the trumpet), so if you want that genre, give her a shot (simply my advice)

once you play any brass instrument, its not that hard to switch, but it depends on how musical you are.
