It is actually an internet unto itself, with proprietary ".onion" links that can only be accessed using the TOR browser [or a special website that converts them into regular internet links]. Many countries block specific internet sites. TOR allows you to use the internet, tricking your computer into thinking that you have an IP address from another country, thus bypassing the blocks.

The TOR network has nodes set up all over the world which act as IP address. The problem that I run into is that each node has several IP addresses attached to it, so when certain websites see that you have one of those IP address, they think that it is malicious or a DDOS attack and block you. But there are ways around that.

TOR eats up a lot of RAM, but is useful as a backup.


Actually, TOR was designed and created by the U.S. military, so thinking that using it will hide you from them is retarded.

Unfortunately, some people do use it for evil, just like the regular internet. There are dark web market places where you can buy pretty much anything using BitCoin [crypto-currency].
